Penn State 2014! Blog 11

The interns at Penn State have stayed as busy as ever! We just finished our second week of our management rotation. We got split into two groups, with Josh and myself going to Findlay dining commons for the first week, and Brittany and Caitlyn working at Pollock dining commons. Josh and I shadowed Steve Clemmons, an assistant manager. The first few days of the rotation, Josh and I followed Steve around, understanding what the managers were responsible for on both a daily and weekly basis. We asked questions and began to understand his thought processes about the flow of traffic, watched for groups of camps to come in, and monitored the status of the dining commons. Steve also worked with us on what he orders for the commons, such as all items that come from the Penn State creamery as well as produce.
The second week of our management rotation, the two groups switched. Josh and I thus moved to Pollock to work for a few days with Kevin Johnston. Kevin is also an assistant manager. This week was similar to the previous week, in that we were shadowing Kevin to understand how Pollock runs as efficiently as it does. Josh and I kept very busy here, with managing the floor to performing a safety inspection. I also got the opportunity to sit in on their safety committee meeting, which was interesting to see how they handle keeping the dining commons a safe place for both employees and customers.
It was interesting to be able to compare and contrast the two different dining commons and the way that they function. Overall, I was able to learn a lot from each of our mentors that I will be able to apply to my next week at Findlay dining commons. Many of the management techniques that I picked up will be important as I move forward as a professional. I really appreciated the time that they donated to us to train us; I feel very fortunate to have gotten wisdom out of experienced managers.
We also all got the opportunity to visit Penn State’s football stadium, the Bryce Jordan Center. Not only did we get to go see the stadium, we were allowed behind the scenes. We went to the football locker room, saw some of the areas that they hold special events at, and even got to sit in the seats of the suite holders. It was incredible to see such a huge stadium and hear about all the work it takes to keep it running. Bob White gave us an amazing tour!

Doing our best to keep up with the team!
Suite life!

Other than that, the other interns and myself have been working hard on our other projects for the internship. We gave formal presentations on a variety of topics and talked about our strengths and weaknesses with public speaking. Another project we have started on is the catering sheet that we are making for another dining commons on campus. We also have our farewell luncheon coming up soon that has required a great amount of planning and detail. More will be posted on the luncheon in the next week! That’s all for now!
