Hi y'all! I've finally arrived in Athens, Georgia and began my summer internship at the University of Georgia! But let me start of by introducing myself:
My name is Nikki Snyder, and I am a student at Michigan State University. I am finishing up my final semester this fall and earning my Bachelors Degree in Dietetics with a specialization in Health Promotion. After graduation in December I plan on completing my RD Internship and earning my masters in Public Health. I have been working in various aspects of the food service field for the past 6 years, and I cannot wait to continue developing my skill this summer as a Food Service Management Intern!
This previous week marked the first week of my eight weight journey at UGA! I arrived in Georgia in the early after noon Wednesday, June 4th, and quickly learned it was going to be a hot summer. Being from Michigan I'm not quiet use to 90 degree weather everyday, but I cannot complain because its much better than the snow! Upon my arrival Kris, my internship director, meet me in the parking lot and I was quickly on my way to get everything set up for the summer.
Kris was very helpful and got me all situated very quickly. I was introduced to the other intern Demi, and I cant wait to spend the summer getting to know her and working side by side! Kris, Demi, Philip and my dad all helped me carry my stuff into my dorm, which made it quick and easy. Fortunately my room as air conditioning, so I know I'll be able to survive the southern heat! After that Demi and I were escorted around campus by Philip, a student here at UGA. He helped me get my ID, and Demi's get her parking pass, and then drove us around campus to acquainted with the area. After everything was all said and down Wednesday evening I turned in early to be ready for Thursday, my first official day as an intern!
Thursday morning we met Kris for breakfast in Snelling (pictured below) and then spent the morning part of our day touring the facilities on campus. UGA's campus has a total for 5 dining halls and countless amounts of grab and go options as well. Only 3 of the dining halls are open during the summer but there are countless options of food at all three of the dining halls. We toured the back of the facilities til about 1:00 pm, and Kris said we didn't even tour all the facilities! The dining service is huge here on campus and the equipment alone is impressive!
Thursday for lunch we at had our internship welcome party, where we met for lunch in "O-house" with other mangers, supervisors, and department heads! Talking with all different positions is fascinating and everyone is super friendly and excited to work with us! Once we finished up lunch we met with Stacia to learn the process UGA Food Service uses to hire students. Once we wrapped up there we were finished the day, and both Demi and I agreed our experience this summer is going to be nothing short of amazing.
Friday we kick started our day with lunch at Snelling with Kris. After lunch we were given 2 hours, a list of clues, and a scavenger hunt to complete! What a great way to figure out our way around campus. We had a blast, got a little sweaty, and figured out all but 2 of the clues. UGA's campus is absolutely beautiful and reminds me of MSU which is a nice taste of home. The pictures below are just a few of the items we had to find. The first picture on the left is me under the gate. Its a school tradition to walk under the Arch once you graduate, and supposedly bad luck if you walk through it before! The top right is a picture of my favorite flowers in the garden behind Snelling, and the bottom picture is actually the original football field for UGA!
After we completed our scavenger hunt we met back at "O-House" to being our evening, We spent the evening job shadowing Tatiana, a student supervisor. Student supervisors are current students of UGA and have a very hands-on position. After job-shadowing her for the evening we learned most of her responsibilities. As a student supervisor they are in charge of necessary discipline areas, informing other students when their break is, assigning closing task, and helping with additional needs.
My internship is just kick starting, but I have already learned so much about management in only two short days. I cannot wait to continue learning and developing my management skills!
For future interns here are a few of the most important aspects I took from this week:
-Be actively engaged by asking questions
-Be outgoing
-Be aware of what YOU want to get from the internship, so you can work to develop those skills
Until next time y'all!
