Week 3 - UGA

Another week for the book! This week flew by, I swear I blink and its Friday somehow. This week we spent time in many different areas. There is so much to learn about each position and its hard to imagine that during our time here we are only scrapping the surface.

Monday
Today we spent time in the Commissary. The Commissary is responsible for caterings food and retails food. The kitchen is separated into three main areas, the hot food production, back shop, and cold food production. We spent a little time in each of these sections and helped prepare the demands for the day.

One of my favorite parts of today was helping make the puppy chow. UGA makes a special puppy chow made of golden grahams, nuts, raisins, peanut butter, and powdered sugar. The puppy chow is handed out to all the freshmen at orientation dinner, and its delicious!

Tuesday
We had an early start this morning, and spent the morning part of our day working in the stockroom. The stockroom's at each dinning hall is supplied by Central Warehouse. We had not been out there yet, so we had Adam take us out and give us a miniature tour! The warehouse had rows of storage and is convent for the dinning commons because if they run out of something they can make a quick trip over to Central.

During the second part of our day we completed a quality assurance audit at The Summit. The managers of different dinning commons take turns completing quality assurance audits at the other dinning commons to ensure the best facilities. The audit was broken down into different sections including employee appearance/ customer service, quality of food, and health code standards. The audit was extremely informative and taught me what I should look to monitor and improve as a manager.

Wednesday
Today we spent the night with catering, a field I am very comfortable with. We catered an etiquette dinner for the football players, and I even learned some things about proper etiquette! Cater does all sorts of different events on campus, and the employees said that each event tends to be different.

Tonight we served a three course dinner and we were each responsible for one table. The event ran very smoothly and after the players were done with dinner we started the clean up process. Because the event was catered at a different location on campus then where catering is located we had to transport all of the dishes and equipment back to Tate Center. After we got back to Tate Center we helped wash the reminder of the dishes and finished up for the night.

Thursday
Today Demi and I were placed at different dinning commons, to learn what the other intern learned last week. So today I focused on scheduling with Adam. Scheduling is definitely a large task, especially because the hours are not the same every day of the week, but Adam has a great system. (Which didn't surprise me, he's super organized!) Other than learning the scheduling today I just spent time working as a manager, helping out where I was needed, and learning more about the managers general duties.

Friday
Today was a very easy and short day! Which was nice after a long week of hard work :) This morning we spent a little time practicing our acting skills. The University is making a video to show customer service for the departments, and Kris asked Demi and I to participate in the food service section!

Weekend
This weekend was Athfest, a music festival downtown with tons of local bands! We spent Friday and Saturday evening checking out different local bands and enjoy the beautiful weather. We could not of asked for better weather to spend time walking around and checking out the different venues. It was a great way to experience all the culture and music Athens has to offer.

TIP FOR FUTURE INTERNS
-Check out Athfest, the $20 wristband is totally worth it!
-Check out as much of the local food as you can, we use our Sunday nights to try new restaurants!
-Dont be timid to ask questions, its the best way to learn.
